GMS NJHS - About our Chapter

The National Junior Honor Society is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding middle school students. More than just an honor roll, NJHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Citizenship and Character.

Once inducted, you are a member of a select group of young people who are considered some of the best and brightest in our country and especially our school.  Honor society members serve as positive role models every day for their classmates.  They are the students trusted to appreciate the importance of knowledge and using its power for good.  The emblem of the NJHS is a flaming torch, which represents knowledge and the NJHS motto is Light is the symbol of trust.

The object of this chapter shall be to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to encourage service to the community, to promote exemplary leadership, and to create a greater sense of responsibility in students of Gorzycki Middle School.

(taken from the Gorzycki Chapter By-Laws):

Membership in this chapter shall be known as active, probationary, and graduate.  Active members shall be known as students in eighth grade who maintain a grade point of 3.6 or higher.  A probationary member shall be known as a student who falls below a grade point of 3.6000, or who has proven himself in danger of not upholding the ideals of citizenship, leadership, character, or service.  Graduate members shall be known as students who have completed their eighth grade year and are entering high school.  Probationary and graduate members shall not vote.

It is important to remember that not all academically eligible students receive an invitation to be inducted.  Each campus establishes their individual expectations (By-Laws) based on the National criterion guidelines.  GMS not only recognizes a child’s academic prowess but their Service, Character, Citizenship and Leadership displayed on campus.

(At GMS, the criterion for NJHS candidates begins with academic achievement and then moves into the application process.  During the application process, teachers provide recommendations for selection for induction into the chapter.  Teachers rate students on a 5 point scale in the areas of leadership, service, character and citizenship as displayed within the school setting.  Students should earn 90% of these possible points for selection. These calculations are then sent to a committee for review.)

**PLEASE NOTE:  TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR ELECTION A STUDENT MUST HAVE A GRADE POINT AVERAGE OF 3.8000.  ONCE INDUCTED, ACTIVE MEMBERS MUST MAINTAIN A GRADE POINT AVERAGE OF 3.6 OR HIGHER. **   If you have questions regarding how the GPA is calculated, click on the link in the side panel on this page.

Once elected, students are expected to commit to serving on one of the Chapter Committees, attend all meetings associated with their role in the Chapter (e.g., all member meetings, selected committee meetings). Information for Chapter meetings, events, activities, etc. are communicated via REMIND101 system and this website.  Once a member is inducted they are expected to join the REMIND101 system for their service year, as well as, check this website on a regular basis. The frequency of the meetings depends on the Committee responsibilities.  Communication regarding missing a meeting is expected to occur prior to the meeting time/date.  All meetings occur after school hours. All members commit to fulfilling these obligations.

In addition to serving on a Chapter Committee, members are required to complete 6 service hours per semester, for a total of 12 service hours during their service year.

Additional information will be provided during the initial member meeting.
