***An Update (3/23/20)***

Hey there 7th Grade Students and Parents,

Spring break is over and I am hard at work. But the weird thing is I am not on campus. And neither are you! And I have no doubt that is creating some uncertainty for you. I know it is for me.

More information will be coming later in the week and there is still a lot that we don't know. But please be aware that we are working on it. My understanding is that the teachers, administrators and leaders from AISD will be spending this week getting a game plan in place and we will definitely let you know once that happens.

In the meantime, here is what I do know:
  • No one is allowed on campus at this time. Custodians will be disinfecting EVERYTHING and, if anyone enters the space, they essentially have to start all over again. That includes me. So, I am unable to access any of the assignments that were in my classroom. Because the shutdown took place BEFORE Spring Break, all of the assignments I had planned on catching up on were still at the school, so they are sort of trapped there for the immediate future.
  • Rest assured, I am not going to allow anyone to have a lower grade because of the situation. The benefit of the doubt will be given to all students. Grades should not be something to worry about at this time.
  • Take a deep breath and be patient. As soon as I know more, you will know more. I promise. But it may take a little while for us to figure all of this out. This is brand new territory for us. While we work on the plan, in order to continue your learning, ungraded enrichment activities can be found here: https://sites.google.com/austinisd.org/aisd-learning-at-home
  • Be safe and stay healthy! That is our biggest priority right now. You and your family's well-being comes before everything else.

As I said, please look for more information soon. Because this situation is still evolving, I would recommend checking your AISD email daily for updates. I will be keeping office hours from 9:30-10:30 & 2:00-3:00 each day where I can respond to any questions or concerns you might have via email. Eventually, I may even do a group teleconference so that we can actually see each other face-to-face. And, lastly, the district has set up an excellent page on their website to address FAQs and allow you the opportunity to ask additional questions. It's located here: https://www.austinisd.org/letstalk

Thanks again, Tigers! Stay strong and listen to the experts on this one. Social distancing will help us get through. Hope to see you (online) soon...

Sincerely,
Mr. Summers

Welcome, 7th grade Tigers! This is my 6th year at Gorzycki and I am super excited to be back! Team 7-1 rocks!

Here's a little bit about me: I've been teaching math for over 10 years now and I can't imagine doing anything else!  I grew up in San Antonio, Texas (which is where my parents still live) and have been a big Spurs fan for as long as I can remember. I went to college in North Carolina at a small liberal arts college named Davidson College (it had about the same number of students that we have here at Gorzycki). After I graduated, I lived in Chicago and Denver for a few years before I finally made my way back to Texas.

My wife and I have a 3-year-old son named Emmett and a 6-month-old son named Silas as well as 2 dogs and a cat. When I am not busy teaching, I like to travel. I went to Colorado this past summer. I've been to many different states and foreign countries over the years and have learned a lot from the various cultures. In my downtime, you can usually catch me reading or going to the theatre or taking a nice run around the lake on the Hike and Bike Trail downtown.

I am really looking forward to meeting all of the new students and parents that I will get to work with on Team 7-1 in the 2019-2020 school year! I hope everyone has had a fun and restful summer. Feel free to contact me at any time with your thoughts and questions. I can't wait to see what we are capable of achieving together this year!
