Learning a band instrument can teach many ideas of transfer:

  • learn how to be more personally responsible.
  • learn how to organize your time to achieve a goal.
  • learn how to work as a team toward common goal.
  • learn how to think critically about themselves and their learning.
  • learn how to analyze and react to what they see, hear, and feel.
  • learn how to adapt quickly to changing situations during a performance.
  • learn how to respond appropriately to failures and successes.
  • learn the value and reward of focused, goal-oriented work
  • be challenged, intellectually and personally.
  • experience the joy and excitement of performing music.
  • HAVE FUN!!!

Beginner Band Update Sept. 11

Hi Everyone,

It has been a great time working with all of your children these past two weeks. I am very proud of their discipline and passion for their specific instruments. Since school started, we have worked on rhythms, breathing fundamentals, music theory, and embouchure/sound production. I have finally allowed the students to take their instrument home today. Below I have provided some rules and guidelines:

1. Students must not assemble the full instrument. I allowed them to take their instrument with the one condition that they would not assemble the whole instrument and attempt to play it at home. This can cause damage to the instrument and create bad habits that will be difficult to erase.

2. Students must practice only with the Head Joint (Flutes) and Reeds (Oboe/Bassoon).

3. Parents - It is normal for students to struggle a bit at first when playing the flute. If they get a little frustrated, remind them about my last bullet point in No.4.

4. Practicing guideline for FLUTES:

- Play in front of a mirror and think about the things we have talked about in class.
-Always have great posture.
-Take a good breath and focus on the aperture of your embouchure.
-Make sure to cover the end of the head joint. (Flutes)
-Think pouty, never happy in your mouth formation.
-NEVER PUFF YOUR CHEEKS.
-Try to hold your sound as long as possible.
-You should see a vapor trail on the mouth plate when done correctly. (FLUTES)
-Generate questions for me so I can help you in class.
-Patience, this is a fine art, it takes time to accomplish playing an instrument.

5. Practicing guidelines for OBOE/BASSOONS:

-Soak your reed before playing with room temperature water.
-Be careful not to drop the reed.
-Practice in front of a mirror think about the things I covered in class.
-NEVER PUFF YOUR CHEEKS.
-Chin should always be flat, never bunched upward.
-Practice with your tuner calibrated at A440.
-Correct pitch when playing only on the reed: G# Oboes, Eb Bassoons.

6. Please do not forget your instrument at home or in the bus!

These are some guidelines to keep you all informed with what is going on in band class and what to expect with instruments coming home. I thank you all for allowing your children to be part of music and I cannot wait to get back in the classroom and start working with them each day!

Thank you,

My idea behind this is to drill heavy the fundamentals and get their endurance back in place. Starting this week, we will start reading music faster and getting into full swing of things in preparation for our first concert. If you ever have any questions or concerns please feel free to email me, I want this class to be best it can be!

Welcome!

Welcome to the Gorzycki Middle School Band Program. I am very excited to be your child's woodwind instructor this coming year. There are a couple of announcements prior to the school year starting. Student will not need their instruments until the third day of school (Wednesday 23rd). The first day will serve as an introduction to band and the classroom expectations will be set. On the second day, an overview of the band handbook will be established along with a small introduction on posture, breathing and rhythm! The third day will be designated to simple fundamentals of music theory and getting acquainted with the instrument parts. This is just a small outline of the first couple of days in band class. I am very excited to start this school year and work very hard for the success of your children. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.
